I am a clinical trial coordinator on oncology clinical trials, where I do everything from taking vitals, drawing labs, dispensing oral and IV chemotherapy treatments, data entry, etc. After getting hired I became certified in phlebotomy and went on to become a Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP). I love what I do and I intend to stay in this field for the rest of my career. I'm very thankful for the human biology program at IU, where the concentration in human health and disease gave me a great start for what I am doing today.
- Jake Berg - Human Health + Disease - Graduated from medical school on 5/1/2021 and will be starting my residency in emergency medicine at Memorial Health System, Marietta, OH in June.
- DJ Shannon - Human Health + Disease - Following graduation, I immediately pursued a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology. My background and education in human health in disease fueled my interest for infectious diseases and I wanted to apply that knowledge to help improve the public's health. As such, I spent several years as an infectious disease epidemiologist where I specialized in antimicrobial resistance and infection prevention in the healthcare setting. After gaining invaluable experience, I transitioned to Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis to be an Infection Preventionist. Little did I know, a short twelve months later I would be dealing with a pandemic on the frontlines. The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for us all, but particularly for those of us in healthcare. My role as an Infection Preventionist is to ensure the practices at my hospital keep patients, staff members, and visitors safe and free from harm and infections. The pandemic forced myself and my colleagues in to impossible situations with no ""right"" answer. I am forever grateful for the knowledge gained during my undergraduate education. I find myself applying everything from content knowledge to my skills in interdisciplinary work that I learned through HUBI on a daily basis. This foundation undoubtedly helped me work through (past and present) the daily challenges as presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

- Molly Cheviron-Hamilton - Human Sexuality + Reproduction - 2020 was a wild year for the world, but the pandemic shined a bright, Barbra Streisand level spotlight upon my field of work. I am a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) for a contract research organization that oversees clinical trials conducted throughout the world. The pandemic brought about a race for COVID-19 Vaccines and treatments, and I am grateful to be a part of that process. As a CRA I travel the country to monitor clinical trials at different research sites to make sure the trials are in compliance with FDA guidelines and ensuring the patients' safety and well being are of utmost importance. Who knew those PubMed snippets from my HUBI days would spark the preparation for a career in clinical research? When I graduated from the HUBI program in 2013, I was a little lost in my career. I wanted to be a physician at the time, but I never got into medical school. I went to graduate school for Health Policy from IUPUI and discovered that I truly didn't have the passion and kindness for patients that a physician requires, but I still enjoyed science and the medical world. After a few years of administrative healthcare and the service industry, I found a position as a clinical research coordinator for IU Simon Cancer Center. I quickly became ensued by the profession and discovered the opportunities available within clinical research. My husband and I moved to Denver, CO from Indianapolis for his job in early 2020, and I became a traveling CRA after the move. The pandemic hit and I was virtually monitoring trials from the comfort of my home. Once it was considered essential for me to travel again, I put on my mask and jumped into the quiet airplanes and surprisingly calm airports and hotels. Throughout my traveling, a myriad of people want to talk to me about my work and I've been able to confirm the safety and efficacy of the vaccine with them. These conversations provide encouragement to me that the pandemic will end and that my career is truly fulfilling and making a difference in everyday life.
