Students pursuing the HUBI degree understand the value of service learning—and the Human Biology Program recognizes its importance, too. Service Learning opportunities enable you to interact with people from many backgrounds, further developing your leadership skills. It’s a rich and meaningful component of undergraduate education.
The concept is a simple one: students provide helpful service at a community agency that is directly connected to their academic coursework while the community agency provides a real-world educational setting for the students. Service Learning provides students with a broader and deeper understanding of the course content, fosters their sense of civic engagement, and sharpens their insights into themselves and their place in the community.

One of the Learning Goals of the Human Biology Program is Civic Engagement. The program challenges you to exhibit social responsibility and active citizenship by using your knowledge and skills to direct scientific inquiry towards the public good.
Many Human Biology students plan to eventually enter Medical School. Others want another career in public health, or in some other aspect of science that improves our world. Service learning opportunities help you explore your options through projects with your peers and others in the community.

The IU Peer Coaches are Cox Exploratory Scholars, selected for this scholarship based on the level and amount of work and service they accomplished during high school, while maintaining a high GPA.
At IUB, they continue to successfully manage their school and involvement activities. Peer Mentors are a mix of undergraduates from a variety of majors. Talk with them, and your idea of what is possible for your education at IUB will expand.
